Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Cagle, William Columbus was born about 1888 in Alabama; died in in Mississipi; was buried in Mississipi.

    Notes:

Research notes for parents or family of William Columbus Cagle:

November 2006 search found no census records with William Cagle born about 1888 in Mississippi.

William would have been living in or around Iuka, Mississippi at the time he married Artie Glasgow and just prior to the birth of their first son Oliver Cagle who was born in Iuka. Research in the 1910 Tishomingo County, Mississippi census brought up only a few families with the name of Cagle.

1900 Coahoma County, Mississippi does have a William Cagle born in August of 1887 in Mississippi. He is living with his Father Hodge born in August of 1852 in Alabama and his mother Matta born in January of 1869 in Alabama. There are 4 other children living with them who were all born in Mississippi: A daughter Cora L. born in March of 1889, George born in October of 1891, Mattie born in September of 1894 and Rachel born in November of 1899. There is also a James Cagle living with them who was born in March of 1875 in Tennessee. His relationship with the head of the household, Hodge, can not be read, however this James is living in Iuke Mississippi on the 1920 Census.

1910 Iuka Township, Tishomingo County, Mississippi
There were only 4 people with the last name of Cagle.
Charlie Cagle who was born about 1873 was born in Mississippi and his father and mother were born in Alabama. He has a wife Belle who was born about 1868 and they have no children.
Jim Cagle who was born about 1878 was born in Mississippi and his father and mother were born in Alabama. He has a wife Della who was born about 1890 and they have no children.
Charlie and Jim are listed on the census next to each other and could be brothers. They are also the right age to be younger brothers of William. Families or groups of brothers often settled in a new area together.

1910 Liberty Township, Tishomingo County, Mississippi (census page 13) Same township as Artie Glasgow and her family.
George W Cagle born about 1862 in Mississippi. His father was born in the United States and his mother was born in Alabama. His wife Laucia?, who's name is unclear on the census, was born about 1856 in Mississippi. Her father was born in Alabama and her mother was born in North Carolina. They have one child living with them Olivia? N., this name is also difficult to read, who was born about 1893 in Mississippi.

1910 Mills Township, Tishomingo County, Mississippi
John James Cagle born about 1866 in Alabama and his wife Prudence born about 1870 in Alabama. They have 8 children living with them ranging in age from 20 to 1 year and 4 months. The census does indicate Prudence gave birth to 10 children and 9 are still living. This would mean their oldest child who would have been born about 1888, the same time as William Columbus Cagle, has already left home. 1900 Census indicates this oldest child was a daughter, Irene.

1910 Providence Township, Tishomingo County, Mississippi
There are two young families with parents about the same age as William Cagle. Although they could be brothers, they are to young to be his parents. John T Cagle family and Chas E Cagle family.

1910 Bay Springs Township, Tishomingo County, Mississippi
Lord Cagle born in Alabama about 1865 and his wife Martha born in Mississippi in about 1871 and 6 of their children ranging in age from 6 to 19 years old. Although they are the right age, they could not be William Cagle's parents because they have 6 children and all 6 children are living with them.

Although there are 194 people by the name of Cagle living in Mississippi, the above Cagles are the only ones living in a county near the Glasgow family.

Unfortunately, Tishomingo County is the most North East county of Mississippi and borders Tennessee and Alabama.

William C. Cagle would have been in the Tishomingo County, Mississippi area around 1920. Wilma Lois (Cagle) Harrison recalls her Granny, Artie Leona Glasgow saying that William came back once before she and the children moved to Oklahoma and he tried to steal her cow which was one of her only means for providing for herself and the children.

William married Glasgow, Artie Leona on 14 Feb 1914 in Tishomingo County, Mississippi. Artie (daughter of Glasgow, William Balis and Hale, Louisa Tena) was born on 12 May 1897 in Iuka, Tishomingo County, Mississippi; died on 17 Mar 1961 in Roswell, Chaves County, New Mexico; was buried in Roswell, Chaves County, New Mexico. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  Glasgow, Artie Leona was born on 12 May 1897 in Iuka, Tishomingo County, Mississippi (daughter of Glasgow, William Balis and Hale, Louisa Tena); died on 17 Mar 1961 in Roswell, Chaves County, New Mexico; was buried in Roswell, Chaves County, New Mexico.

    Other Events:

    • Census: Apr 1910, Liberty Precinct, Tishomingo County, Mississippi
    • Census: 28 Jan 1920, Tishomingo County, Mississippi
    • Residence: 1930, Zella Township, Comanche County, Oklahoma

    Notes:

November 2006 search found no census records prior to 1910 with Artie Leona Glasgow born around 1897 in Mississippi.

    Children:
    1. 1. Cagle, Oliver Preston was born on 17 Dec 1914 in Iuka, Tishomingo County, Mississippi; died on 23 Mar 1985 in Rockport, Aransas County, Texas; was buried in Rockport, Aransas County, Texas.
    2. Cagle, Marquis Kermit was born on 19 Apr 1916 in Iuka, Tishomingo County, Mississippi; died on 22 Sep 1962 in Scramento, Scramemto County, California.

Generation: 3

  1. 6.  Glasgow, William Balis was born on 10 Mar 1840 in Marion County, Alabama (son of Glasgow, William H and J, Nancy); died on 24 Mar 1925 in Faxon, Comanche County, Oklahoma.

    Other Events:

    • Occupation: farmer
    • _MILT: Confederate Army A 1 Alabama Calvary
    • Census: 1850, Marion County, Alabama
    • Census: 1860, Tishomingo County, Mississippi
    • Census: Apr 1910, Liberty Precinct, Tishomingo County, Mississippi
    • Census: 28 Jan 1920, Tishomingo County, Mississippi

    Notes:

June 2010, Wilma Harrison said William is burried at Letitia Cemetary east of Lawton and a grand son applied for his head stone to be supplied by the government due to his Civil War service and the government did supply the head stone.

The1910 census indicates William's parents were both born in Tennessee, although the later 1920 census states this is unknown.

June 2010, found a few records online of William's Civil War service, but could not find him listed online on the rosters for his regiment. I did find it strange that there were was a William S Glasgow and a W S Glasgow in the same company of only a few men. This may be a typo from who ever typed the information for the internet.

Also, I could not figure out why William would be in Marion, Alabama in 1850, in Tishimingo, Mississippi in 1860 and then go hundreds of miles back to Marion, Alabama to in list for the Civil War. Further research of maps shows Marion, Alabama is not in Marion County. Marion County, Alabama borders Tishomingo County, Mississippy.

I also could not find William on a Census just after or in the 20 years following the Civil War. More research needs to be done in these two bordering counties. William was 50 when he married Louisa, he may have had a whole other family with grown children when he married Louisa who was 20 years younger than he was.

American Civil War Soldier Record indicates William served in the Confederate Army. He enlisted as a 2nd Lieutenant and was commissioned in Company G 13th Infantry Regiment for Alabama. Source record 425.

1910 United States Federal Census Record for Liberty Precinct, Tishomingo County, Mississippi indicates William B. and Lou T. gave birth to 7 children and are living with all 7 of their children. The census states every person in the home did farm labor, with the exception of the youngest 7 year old child, although census records of this time usually indicated the wife was a house wife or kept house. It also shows no one in the family had been out of work in the previous year. The census indicates William, Louisa, and their son George could not read or write, however their children John, Jacob, Artie, William R. and Virtie could read and write and George, Jacob, Atrie, William R., and Virtie were attending school. Due to notes the census taker made on the census record, it is difficult to tell if the farm was owned, rented or mortgaged. The last section of the census shows William was survivor of the Confederate Army.

1920 United States Federal Census Record for 3rd District, Tishomingo County, Mississippi indicates William B and his wife Louisa M are living with six of their children George W, J Nash, William R, Virtie M, Early R and their daughter Artie L Cagle with her two young children Oliver P who is 5 and Marquis K (Kermit, who's first name is pronounced Markus). The census indicates Artie was widowed, however it was known by her children, Oliver and Kermit and by her grandchildren and step-grandchildren that Artie's husband William Columbus Cagle did not die at that time. Artie could have been trying to hide from him. It was said that William Columbus Cagle later tried to cause trouble for Artie, he later remarried and he had other children. The census also shows William B was born in Alabama and it is unknown to him where his parents were born. William B, Louisa M, their son Early could not read or write, however the rest of their children could read and write, but no one in the home attended school that year. It also shows the family rented, William was a farmer who was working on his own account and George W, J Nash, William R and Early R were also working on the farm for wages.

1930 Faxon, Comanche County, Oklahoma Census indicates L. T. (Lou) is living with her sons George and Rylie and her two grandsons Oliver and Kermit Cagle. It is believed William B. Glasgow passed away prior to this census since L. T. Glasgow indicates she is widowed.

William B Glasgow's Civil War Pension Index indicates William served in the Alabama Confederate Army, he was invalid on July 8, 1899 in Mississippi, Louisa was widowed on March 24, 1925 and in Oklahoma at he time she applied.

William married Hale, Louisa Tena about 1892. Louisa (daughter of T, Father Lou and T, Mother Lou) was born on 19 Apr 1865 in Mississippi; died on 20 Apr 1940 in Lawton, Comanche County, Oklahoma; was buried in Letitia Cemetery, Comanche County, Oklahoma. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 7.  Hale, Louisa Tena was born on 19 Apr 1865 in Mississippi (daughter of T, Father Lou and T, Mother Lou); died on 20 Apr 1940 in Lawton, Comanche County, Oklahoma; was buried in Letitia Cemetery, Comanche County, Oklahoma.

    Other Events:

    • Census: Apr 1910, Liberty Precinct, Tishomingo County, Mississippi
    • Census: 28 Jan 1920, Tishomingo County, Mississippi
    • Census: 08 Apr 1930, Faxon, Comanche County, Oklahoma

    Notes:

1910 United States Federal Census Record for Liberty Precinct, Tishomingo County, Mississippi indicates Lou's name is Lou T.

1920 United States Federal Census Record for 3d District, Tishomingo County, Mississippi indicates; name is Louisa M; father was born in Pennsylvania; mother was born in Mississippi; born about 1862. I used the birth year as 1865 as this is what is etched on her tombstone.

1930 United States Federal Census Record for Faxon, Comanche County, Oklahoma indicates L. T. Glasgow is living with her son George and her two grandsons Oliver and Kermit Cagle.

    Children:
